I got the call at 5 am. It was Siseko. Carmen had been labouring most of the night and was 8cm dilated. I had spoken to Carmen the day prior and she mentioned that she was going to the hospital for a check up, as they thought her waters might have broken the night before. Needless to say, I hardly slept a wink that night!
I raced to the hospital thinking I may just miss this one! From 8 centimeters to delivery can sometimes happen pretty fast. Siseko and the medical team knew though, that little Mr Alakhe was taking his time.
After a long, hard and emotional labour, he arrived! Alakhe Eli was finally here! He struggled a little in the beginning so he soon went to the NICU. Soon after, Carmen was wheeled into the intensive care, and her little boy was placed chest to chest – where he belonged. He bounced back beautifully!
I thank you, Carmen and Siseko, from the bottom of my heart, for inviting me to document such a personal and momentous occasion in your lives. I am forever changed.
May your new little family be blessed.
