The nerves were high and there was much excitement around. Little Grayson was extremely excited to meet his new little sister. Mom was wheeled to theatre a little earlier than expected (just as I arrived – phew!). However, we waited a little while to actually go in…
As beautiful little Hope was born, she was immediately placed onto Moms chest for some skin to skin. No blankets, no wrapping and very little cleaning took place. This has huge benefits for both Mom and Baby. As Caesareans can be quite a shock to the system for both Mom and Baby, there is nothing more precious and rewarding than having your little one placed onto your chest as soon as she is born. She gains warmth from Moms chest/body, good healthy bacteria from Moms skin to build her immune system and she can once again hear Moms beating heart, a familiar womb sound. I was incredibly surprised by the theatre staff and so very happy to see all this happening. Sadly it is not very common during caesareans in South Africa. This is a start, and a great one!
Little Hope was warmly welcomed by Grannies, Aunties and Uncles!
Thank you to Amy and Chris for inviting me to document this very special day – I am forever changed. May you and your new little family be blessed.
